There are only a few requirements to join Warrenton Rural Vol. Fire Dept.:

- 18+ years of age (no maximum age)
- Valid NC driver’s license
- Pass a background check (good driving history; no felonies; no misdemeanors involving theft, fraud, deceit, or violence).
- Attend monthly business and training meetings.
- Respond to a preponderance of dispatched calls.
- Firefighters: Obtain a minimum of 36 hours of training annually.
- EMRs: Obtain at least 16 hours of medical continuing education.
Though not a requirement to join, it is the expectation that members will attend ongoing trainings and continuing education in order to eventually obtain the following certifications:
Warrenton Rural VFD provides training and continuing education classes at no financial cost to members. (Free continuing education training provided through the NC community college system.)
- NC Firefighter I & II
- NC Hazard Materials (HazMat)
- NC Emergency Vehicle Driver (EVD)
- Healthcare Provider CPR
- NC EMR or EMT (optional)

Youth members participate in hands-on training focused on learning basic knowledge and skills in firefighting and medical responders.

- Enrolled in school.
- At least a "C" average.
- Satisfactory school attendance record.
- No disciplinary issues.
- No adverse driving history.
